A hybrid vehicle is any vehicle that can run on two separate power sources. So, technically, a rowboat with a sail is a hybrid vehicle. Most recently a hybrid vehicle has come to mean a car that runs on gas and battery power. The batteries are rechargeable and the combination of the two fuel sources is intended to improve gas mileage and reduce emissions into the air thereby improving the environment. Can one vehicle really do all of that? Some people say yes and some people say no.
Theoretically the gas mileage on a hybrid vehicle should be significantly greater than that of a standard gas powered vehicle. However some drivers are finding that this just is not the case. One driver in Cincinnati, Ohio was so excited about his new Honda Civic Hybrid that he started an internet blog to let the world know of his joy at the potential of getting nearly 48 miles to the gallon of gasoline. He even got MO MILES as his license plate. But in the end he realized that he is only getting around 31 miles to the gallon and he feels cheated. Many hybrid vehicle owners are reporting the same issues but the car manufacturer claims are all legitimate. The problem is that the standards used to figure gas mileage get skewed when you gauge a hybrid vehicle and the numbers can get inflated. That is not to say that all hybrids are inflating their mileage, some get great gas mileage, but many owners are feeling cheated by car manufacturer claims.
There Is Some Good
Hybrid vehicles are considered to be just as safe as any standard gas powered vehicle. The same safety standards used to grade gas powered vehicles are used on hybrid vehicles so there is no attempt to make the cars any less substantial by the manufacturers. Hybrid vehicles do cause less emissions into the atmosphere and thereby do less damage to the environment. If you are a person that wants to do their part to keep the planet clean then you may want to consider a hybrid.
Last, but certainly not least, buying a hybrid can get you a nice credit on your next federal tax return. So while it may seem like there is some evidence mounting against hybrids the fact remains that buying, and driving, a hybrid can be a very good decision. A good decision for your wallet and a good decision for our environment.
