A History Of Electric Car Technology

With gas prices continuing to soar, and concerns with becoming too dependent on foreign oil, many companies and consumers are looking for alternative fuel. Electric car technology has a long history, and could be a possible solution to the rising concerns with oil usage.

Electric Car Technology: A Peek At The Past

With the invention of the automobile clear back in the 1900 s, came some similar complications that we currently have. Oil was very expensive to process, and people could not afford to drive their vehicles.

Electric car technology was created to give consumers an inexpensive way to drive their cars. During its heyday, there were more electric cars on the road than gas powered cars. Although the electric car technology was available, the process to refine oil was made simpler and the hand crank that was used to start a car was replaced with a starter that needed gasoline to trigger the mechanism. All of these events conspired to leave electric car technology in the dust.

Electric car technology has been discussed within the car manufacturing companies for years. With oil always being an unknown resource, as far as how much it will cost to refine it, oil production being unstable and other worries, it makes sense to look for alternatives to fueling vehicles.

Electric car technology is becoming more efficient and easier to use. Electric car technology uses batteries to actually run a car. These batteries can store up enough energy to run a vehicle for many miles. The cost to run a vehicle on batteries, as opposed to gasoline, is much cheaper and by using batteries the car also releases less pollution into the air.

Electric car technology is making great strides all the time. Many of the big car manufacturers are beginning to sell hybrid cars. Toyota has a very successful hybrid car that can get 46 mpg. This hybrid car uses both electric batteries and a gasoline powered engine. There is a computer on board that switches from one engine to the other based on what the car is doing. When the car is sitting and idling, it uses the electric batteries, when it needs more speed it uses the gas powered engine.

Electric car technology can be an important tool in several areas. First it can help by decreasing pollution and the green house effect on our planet. Second, it can enable countries to become less dependent on oil and make us more self sufficient.
