Used Electric Car Choices Are Limited
If you are looking for a used electric car, there may not be many choices on the market. However, if you do find one, there are a few things to look for before taking possession. One of the few electric cars made in the United States, the EV-1 produced by General Motors, has lived its life and any that were remaining on dealer s lots were collected and crushed in 2005. General Motors cited a lack of consumer interest in halting production and sales of this breed of vehicle.
Many who bought the EV-1 may not be willing to part with a working model, but with the cessation of production by General Motors, repair parts will be at a premium. Essentially, there may not be a lot that can go wrong with a used electric car, but if something does break, it will be extremely difficult to find the part. Finding someone to repair it may also be difficult as not many trained technicians are available for a used electric car.
There may be a certain logic in buying a used electric car, using the old family gas hog for longer trips and using the electric vehicle for shorter excursions. Many of the electric vehicles available may be a one or two seat model and a short run to the store to pick up a couple of things, without any gas or oil cost can make a used electric car a logical choice for a second vehicle.
Taking Chance On Outdate Technology
Like many products on the market, the newer models all claim improvements. Some may simply be a cosmetic change, but some may involve deeper technological differences. Much like computers that advance so fast the joke is a new model comes in the back door as one goes out the front. When considering the purchase of a used electric car, check out the charging technology involved. Newer batteries may recharge quicker and last longer on a single charge than ones that are only a few years old.
Many electric cars that may be on the market have been made from converted gasoline engine vehicles. Some by companies trying to get in on the market for electric vehicles and others by individuals who bought a kit and made on in their garage. It helps to know the origin of any used electric car as the construction quality may not be up the standards you would expect.
